British Transport Police

The British Transport Police are the guardians of UK railways, helping the millions of people who use the railways of England, Wales and Scotland to get home safely and on time.
The British Transport Police operates across various divisions of the UK policing railways and providing their service to rail operators, their staff and passengers. They also police the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, the Midland Metro tram system, Croydon Tramlink, Tyne and Wear Metro, Glasgow Subway and IFS cloud cable car.
The Challenge
The BTP needed to upgrade their office equipment to facilitate better communication, collaboration and training across their different locations. They wanted to use Microsoft Surface Hubs, which are large interactive displays that combine whiteboarding, video conferencing and projection and integrate with Microsoft Windows. However, they faced some challenges in procuring, installing and setting up these devices, such as:
- – They needed to supply the Hubs to two different locations: their Force Headquarters in London and their area headquarters in Leeds.
- – They had to install each device, which weighs 160 kg, up narrow stairs in their buildings.
- – They had to remove and recycle all the cardboard and packaging materials from the devices, which were bulky and could pose a fire hazard. It also did not help with their green initiative and sustainability goals.
